Seal blubber
From mid-October, grey seals haul out on to the shore to give birth and mate. Females are at least five years old before they produce pups and the youngsters are totally dependent on their mothers, suckling milk that's rich in fat and proteins. Once weaned, the pups are deserted, without even being taught how to fish, so a good reserve of blubber can mean the difference between life and death.
