A willing female often attracts several males so the male Indian rhinoceros has to chase off rivals. They may look armour plated, but their skin is actually quite easily damaged. Even once the prize is won, coupling can be interrupted by the arrival of other males. If not harrassed, the male can stay up for around two hours, and the female has to support his 2 ton weight for the duration.
