As ponds dry out, most of the fish perish, but not this one. Climbing perch can survive out of water for more than 24 hours, as they have air-breathing organs much like lungs. They lever themselves across the mud with spikes on their bony gill covers. They must finish their journey under cover of darkness or become an easy breakfast for predators.
