The Strand - Monday 5th October 2009.

This Monday's Strand is a shortened version of World Book Club with Gunter Grass. Presented by Harriett Gilbert.

The best of the world's arts, film, music, literature and music brought to you every day. Presented by Harriett Gilbert.

This week we鈥檝e a special World Book Club coming from the northern German city of Lubeck.

This month's guest has been described as the world鈥檚 most important living writer. He is the Nobel prize-winning German novelist Gunter Grass and we鈥檝e been invited to his home in Germany to put your questions to him about his internationally celebrated novel 'The Tin Drum'. Bitter and impassioned The Tin Drum charts the rise and fall of Nazism through the mischievous eyes of Oskar Matzerath, a dwarf who decided to stop growing at the age of three. First published half a century ago, The Tin Drum is being re-published in new translations all over the world this year to mark its 50th birthday.
