Deep surprises

At the surface of the ocean, water becomes steam at 100 degrees centigrade. However, down in the deep sea under extreme pressures, water remains liquid at temperatures as hot as 400 degrees centigrade. But even here, in water loaded with hydrogen sulphurides - usually poisonous to normal life processes - living creatures can be found. (Courtesy of WHOI.)
