In 1972 US President Richard Nixon went on a diplomatic mission to China, which was still under the communist rule of Chairman Mao.

He hoped for a meeting with Mao. Which was granted.

Nixon said of the relationship between the US and China "This is the hour. This is the day for our two peoples to rise to the heights of greatness which can build a new and a better world."

Winston Lord went with Nixon as special assistant to US National security adviser Henry Kissinger. He talks to Witness about that ground-breaking trip.
