Piling on pounds
As winter approaches in Alaska, food gets progressively harder to find. Brown bears here grow larger than anywhere in the world and once a year they congregate at the coast in the hope of fattening up before winter. The event that brings them all to this one spot is the annual salmon run. Many bears tackle them upriver, but here by the sea the bears get first choice and the best spoils. Each bears survival depends on this run of fish staying strong. In years when the salmon are scarce, the bears face starvation but this looks to be a bumper year, and the bears are piling on the pounds.
