Orangutans grow up fast and the Forest School at the sanctuary is home to the older apes. They鈥檙e on the verge of graduating to the islands and, just like human teenagers, some can be real delinquents. Steve hands out bananas and gets whacked with a branch for his pains. Being so used to babies in the sanctuary, it's easy to forget that these animals grow into much stronger and much bigger animals. They鈥檙e probably as strong as presenter Steve Leonard. But it鈥檚 not just physical size and strength that's the problem, it鈥檚 attitude as well. As babies, they're all very, very dependent on human contact and want to be in close contact with the group. But as they get older, and more independent, they want to spread out, so, this is quite an unnatural gathering so behaviour is a little boisterous. Steve is interrupted suddenly by having to dodge a falling tree trunk, pushed over by one of the orangs. They've now pulled pretty much all the smaller trees down, and this is why they have to be put out on to the island where they鈥檙e fed and then left pretty much to their own devices. They can't be disciplined or controlled, and can be quite dangerous.
