Nose for survival
Saiga are one of the less familiar faces of the ice age scene. Like musk oxen, saiga antelope have a thick winter coat of hollow hairs for extra insulation. But they have another adaptation all of their own: an enormous bulbous nose. The oddly shaped nose contains large air sacs which prewarm the cold air when breathing in and retain precious moisture when breathing out. This made saiga well able to withstand the extreme dry cold climate of ice age Beringia. Nowadays, they are only found on the steppes of central Asia, another bleak, cold environment.
