Autumn storms cause nutrient-rich water to spill out from Ninagaloo Reef so that for a brief period the lifeless waters outside the reef become a nourishing soup. This sparks a feeding frenzy as animals arrive to cash in on the bonanza. Whale sharks, giant ocean cruisers, make huge treks as they're sure they'll get a spot of lucnh here. Ningaloo Reef is the only place in the world where you can see them feeding so close to shore. They aren't the only ones to have this logged in their biological diaries. Huge shoals of sardines also arrive creating an eerie atmosphere as the dense shoal shuts out all the light from above. Predators - such as the dog-tooth tuna and sharks - turn up to hunt the sardines, working the sardines like dogs to sheep.
