Wheat once grew only around the Mediterranean. But 10,000 years ago a revolution took place, its seeds were accepted by a small group of human beings as food. That food was so much to their liking, that they sowed the wheat and other cereal crops wherever they settled and carried it with them as they colonised the earth. A few species, by recruiting the aid of animals and in particular ourselves, have become the most successful grass plants in the world. With our help they have eliminated all of their competitors, and short-circuited the ecological cycles that had existed for millions of years. These plants have managed to claim for their own exclusive use, the wide fertile, well-watered lands that once supported rich communities of animals and plants. These grasses have solved the social struggle, they have eliminated the competition.
