Impregnable fortress
Some tortoises have especially good defences. The eastern box turtle is a type of tortoise which lives in North America. Racoons can eat tortoises, but the eastern box turtle is safe. It has a 'drawbridge' - the ability to pull the base of its shell up to meet the top, sealing it up completely. The raccoon bites and scratches at the box turtle, which retreats into its shell and is now invulnerable to the raccoon's teeth. The raccoon gives up and leaves, and the turtle takes a cautious peek out of its shell to check that it has gone.
