America gets tough with China. It argues that Beijing is keeping its currency artificially low with the result that the rest of the world has higher unemployment. Steve Evans talks to C. Fred Bergsten, the director of the Petersen Institute for International Economics. He's just testified on Capitol Hill to a House of Representatives Committee which is due to report formally on the Chinese currency. If it does officially designate China as a manipulator of its currency, there would be strong demands for punitive action.
But there is a counter-view, and that is that real politics will stop America going into a trade war. That's the view of Phil Levy of the American Enterprise Institute.
