Bringing up baby
Young meerkats are given food by older members of the hunting party, but there comes a time when they have to learn to hunt for themselves... so it's no surprise that meerkats have a degree of immunity to scorpion venom. The division of labour in meerkat society goes well beyond just teachers and look-outs who bake in the full glare of the sun as they carry out their community service. There are also babysitters who dedicate their time to the youngest members of the group while going without food all day. And yet they remain vigilant, for a young meerkat would make a tasty morsel for many a predator, including a jackal. The babysitters have no young of their own, but they do have a large stake in the survival of the kits. The kits are the future of the meerkat group, and it's a future that depends on co-operation.
