Amorous amphibians
On damp, mild nights in February, toads just out of hibernation set off to migrate towards their breeding grounds. The hazardous journey can be anything up to two or three miles. Some males ambush the larger females and try to hitch a ride on their backs. The reproductive drive of these amphibians is remarkable. There are many casualties on the roads, despite toad tunnels, but through sheer numbers, the hoards win through.
