Chemical engineering in the 20th century led to the development of a range of man-made fibres. One of these is now synonymous with bullet proof jackets, but it has many other uses across a range of industries. Invented by a female scientist in the 1960s it is now manufactured in Northern Ireland and exported from there all over the world.
