Sefton Central is a new Merseyside seat. It connects the majority of the old Knowsley North and Sefton East seat (held since 1986 by Labour's George Howarth), with areas from neighbouring Crosby, which is no longer a constituency. Crosby's MP Claire Curtis-Thomas is standing down.
This creates a socially mixed seat, as the constituency comprises two very separate entities. Major employers in the constituency include Kodak and News International.
The constituency is also home to Aintree racecourse, home of the Grand National.
