A nestbox on Sculthorpe Moor was the scene of some unruly behaviour caught on one of the Springwatch nestcams. A tawny owl comes into the nest box and fights the resident barn owl, and is driven off. The barn owl moved out, and returned a couple of weeks later to find a stock dove had laid its eggs in the box. The stock dove displays and flicks its wings at the owl to try and keep the nest box to itself. You might expect the owl to win, but the stock dove has invested a lot as it has already laid eggs. So although the maxim is that the territory owner usually wins in cases like these, in this case the stock dove held its ground.
