Little beauties
The first little owls were brought across to the UK from the continent by the Victorians. They are surprisingly visible for owls, happily sitting out for a sunbathe and even hunting in broad daylight. They normally nest in tree holes, but have been known to investigate other options such as chimneys. Another non owl-like quality is their diet. Little owls don't eat small, furry animals - their main diet consists of molluscs, earthworms and insects. They don't even sound much like a traditional owls. Their call is more a squeak than a hoot.
