Single mother in danger
What's been chewing holes in the leaves? It's the work of a leafcutter bee. The bee carries sections of leaf away. She's a hard-working single mum, and she lines a nest chamber with the leaf fragments. Then she fill the chamber with pollen and lays a single egg, which she seals inside the chamber. She'll never see her offspring again - she's busy building 20 more chambers, and pollinating the flowers. But is she safe? There's a female crab spider lurking on a flower. The spider can change colour depending on the flower she's crawling on. She's sometimes called The White Death. Crab spiders will happily tackle insects much bigger than themselves. The little bee has flown to safety, but the crab spider is nothing if not patient. It grabs another bee and injects venom into it.
