Coverage of the forty-sixth annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark.Estonian group Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL cruised to victory with the song "Everybody", making Aruban Dave Benton the first black winner of the contest. The football stadium chosen to accommodate the contest blew the previous year's then record venue out of the water, seating 38,000 fans. However it was not entirely a success as many of the audience were unable to see the stage and it was a daunting arena for the acts to sing in.Televoting became compulsory this year although countries were allowed to use a 50-50 system with a jury as well. Back up juries were used for the full vote in exceptional cases only where there were technical problems or a poor telephone infrastructure made it untenable.Yet again the European Broadcasting Union changed the way the line-up would be decided - this year the top fifteen placed countries would automatically qualify for 2002 along with the "Big Four" and the remaining places would go to those relegated the year before.Once again the smart money was not with the bookies as favourites France, Greece and Slovenia were quickly overtaken in the voting by Denmark and Estonia, with the latter emerging as the winner. The United Kingdom's veteran Eurovision commentator Terry Wogan caused offence to the Danes after referring to the hosts as Doctor Death and the Tooth Fairy or Little Mermaid and the 大象传媒 was forced to issue an apology. More controversy emerged over alleged plagiarism by the Swedish delegation of a Belgian entry from the 90's. The matter was eventually settled in court and the Swedes were vindicated. This year's interval act was the well-known Danish pop group Aqua, who performed a medley of their hits including "Barbie Girl" and "Dr Jones".
