Coverage of the forty-seventh annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Saku Suurhall in Tallinn, Estonia.Latvian entry Marie N won a narrow victory over Malta with the song "I Wanna".There was some concern about whether hosts Estonia would be able to afford the staging of the event. However their government assisted as did several fund-raising events, and the contest, with the theme of a modern fairytale, went ahead as planned. The winners were lucky to get a spot in the competition - the European Broadcasting Union opened up extra places in the contest and Portugal declined theirs because of problems at their national broadcaster, thus paving the way for Latvia. This time it was the turn of Swedish and Belgian commentators to cause controversy after telling the public not to vote for the Israeli singer Sarit Hadad.
