There are several species of British owl, but it is surely no coincidence that the one we love the most, is the one we see the most. The barn owl are crepuscular, rather than nocturnal, and can often be seen hunting at dusk and dawn, quartering a local field. They do have a dark side however, nesting in barns and old buildlings their unusual screeching call has gained them a reputation and started many a rumour of buildings inhabited by ghosts. But by far the most shocking revelation about barn owls concerns their offspring. There are often chicks of different sizes and ages all together in the same nest. It mght look cute, but come the time of food shortages, the big ones will eat their smaller siblings.
