Basking glory

When cameraman Gordon Buchanan heard that basking sharks had been sighted off his home island of Mull, he went along to investigate. The best chance to get up close to the sharks is to be as unobtrusive as possible. This gentle giant of the ocean is certainly huge, but it is completely harmless to humans, and by using a kayak, Gordon manages to get really close - so close that the shark actually brushes against his boat. His underwater camera shows them swimming around and below his kayak. Over the summer, the water warms up and the plankton bloom spreads north. The sharks follow the bloom, feeding on the plankton just like cows grazing on fresh grass. After spending the summer months feeding in our coastal waters, basking sharks head off back into the high seas, and despite their large size, we don't really know where they go.
