Scrape scraps
One of the Springwatch editors has been having fun with the coot footage and introduces this sequence of fighting males boxing championship-style. Coots may look fairly harmless birds, but they're actually quite aggressive and fighting is quite common behaviour. They don't have large spurs on their feet like pheasants, but that doesn't stop them really getting stuck in. Two birds fighting are often joined by a third and it's difficult to tell if this is a territorial battle or just a fight for fighting's sake. Coots have even been known to take ducklings and eggs, and more surprisingly still, to eat their own babies if there are too many.
