Highland dawn
The birds of the Scottish Highlands wake up very early, but the dawn chorus up here is subtly different to any other part of the country. A tawny owl calls down in the valley; a woodcock calls from the tree above Simon King's head. It's not just the birds, there are mammals as well: a roe deer barks in the distance. It is the blending of the familiar calls with those less often heard, like the wren singing alongside a redstart, and a woodcock next to a willow warbler that makes this such an experience. The whole symphony is accompanied by the high pitched whine of midges, but as the light continues to increase the dawn chorus performance draws to a close.
