Churchill Faces Defeat at Dunkirk
Episode 1 of 4
The story of how Britain faced the world's first sustained bombing offensive, with testimonies from pilots, evacuees, firemen and others who fought and lived through the Blitz. Sue Johnston narrates.
This programme begins in May 1940. Within weeks Hitler had crushed France, dominated mainland Europe and threatened to bomb and invade the British Isles. The British Army was driven back to the coast at Dunkirk and forced to abandon most of its modern equipment on the way there. The Soviet Union, meanwhile, is allied to Germany; and a neutral America can offer only a little practical help. All around the world, Britain's defeat or capitulation is expected imminently.
