Gull versus gull
By July the first of the season鈥檚 young gulls have taken to the water. It鈥檚 a dangerous time. On their own they鈥檙e at risk from the principle predator of the islands - the great black-backed gull. If young birds get into trouble their parents will try to distract the attacker, while their offspring sneak away. It鈥檚 a deadly game. Weakened by its escape, young feathers are then in danger of becoming waterlogged. It must get clear of the water to stand any hope of survival, which isn't easy on the wave-bashed rocks at the shore. Out of the waves, but still not out of danger, the juvenile gull is perhaps then even more at risk on land. Its only hope is to regain its strength under the cover of darkness.
