A tribute to Jack Parnell

Late night big band, jazz and irresistible sounds, including a tribute to band leader and composer Jack Parnell who died last week.

A note from Paul:

As you may already have heard, or read, Jack Parnell died last weekend at the age of 87. He was one of Britain芒聙聶s best swing drummers and also musical director over many years for ATV's Sunday Night at the London Palladium. During World War Two he served in the RAF and played drums in a small jazz group that broadcast often under the name of the Radio Rhythm Club Sextet.

When Ted Heath formed his big band in 1944, it was Jack who was first call for the drum chair. He formed his own successful big band in the early 1950s.

The Late Paul Barnes has a soft spot for that band: its version of April in Paris backed by Cottontail was on the first 78 rpm disc he ever bought 芒聙聯 in 1953, at the age of 14.

Paul and Jack were friends for many years, so Saturday芒聙聶s programme at 11pm will include a generous send-off with plenty of music for colour.

Tune in 芒聙聯 you know it makes sense.

Pip, pip
