The life and times of David Manson, the Belfast school teacher and reformer is outlined. Manson made his mark in Belfast during the eighteenth century, through setting up his own school 'teaching by way of amusement'. We learn about his innovative non-caning approach and how he used a royalty reward scheme as an incentive to his pupils. The growth of Manson's school is described and as well as how he worked as a brewer, dabbled in inventions and wrote books.
