The Tale of Peter Kinnen

A new translation into Scots of Beatrix Potter’s ‘Peter Rabbit’ from 1902, has been completed by translator, Lynn McGeachie of the Beatrix Potter Society. The book has all the traditional pictures alongside the Scots text.

Lynn tells Conal Gillespie about Beatrix Potter’s Scottish connection: for many years, she spent her summers in the Perthshire Highlands where she would have heard the Scots language spoken by the local people everyday. From her journal, we know that Beatrix loved the Scots language - and Mr McGregor certainly seems like the archetypal Scots farmer!

Lynn talks about her translation work and how she tried to retain Potter’s atmosphere throughout, as well as trying to choose correct Scots words from a wide number of dialects. She tells Conal that children are responding well to the translations. (Broadcast: 14 Mar 2005)
