Australian Week
News from the University of Ulster’s ‘Australian week’, set up by Professor John Wilson, Director of the Institute of Ulster-Scots Studies.
The Institute explores international dimensions of Ulster-Scots emigration and, over the past years, they have had lecture series on emigration to Canada, United States and New Zealand.
For this year’s Australian series, Professor Elizabeth Malcolm gives a talk on ‘Forgotten People’, demonstrating that many Ulster-Scots emigrants played a significant role in Australian history but this has largely fallen out of the history books.
Dr Jennifer Harrison of Queensland University talks about the importance of the shipping lists in carrying out this research; and Dr Diane Hall of Melbourne University discusses the dispersion of Ulster-Scots around Australia. (Broadcast: 5 Mar 2006)
