School life in 1890

John Dilwyn Williams is an Education Officer for the Gwynedd Archives and museum service. In the programme he plays the role of a Victorian schoolmaster.

He wants the children to know what life was like back in 1890. This does however pose some problems as corporal punishment was rife back in that time. In the programme John Dilwyn Williams has to come up with way of creating the sense of threat of physical punishment that the children back in 1890 felt but without the actual punishment.

He feels the greatest challenge facing the children as they experience life in an 1890 school is not talking unless they are spoken to first. Today鈥檚 classrooms are far more relaxed.

He has researched school log books from the time and has found that it was not all bad being at schoolchild in 1890.
