In the Namib Desert even the toughest animals struggle in the heat. Gemsbok trek to the crests of the highest dunes to seek relief in the breeze. With no cloud cover, solar radiation is intense and the midday sand is as hot as a bed of burning coal. A shovel-snouted lizard does the 'Namib quickstep' - over millions of years, these lizards have learned how to avoid frying their feet, lifting them off the sand for a few seconds in turn.
