Selling the American Dream
Jerry Della Femina believes he is the embodiment of the American dream.
From a poor Italian American background growing up with a learning disability, he started his working life as a messenger boy in Manhattan.
Today Della Femina has become one of the most celebrated figures in the history of the advertising world.
Apart from living the dream, Della Femina's profession was all about selling it. In the second half of the 20th Century, the American dream underwent a dramatic transformation, thanks to Madison Avenue and mass culture.
There was a phenomenal growth in advertising, aided by the arrival of the "dreambox" placed in American homes - television.
Selling the dream was the name of the game.
