Washed out

The surf spectacular of the Severn Bore cuts through the rocks that tell our story, and leaves in its wake a fossil treasure trove. In its wake, we can take a peek into a postcard from the past. High tides - especially the Severn bore here in Gloucestershire - lay bare the remains of life that once thrived in the Jurassic seas. Less and less of this sticky mud was laid down, because the seas cleared. Instead, layers of creamy limestone piled up that have now become - east of the Severn estuary - the Cotswolds.
