Council agrees to 'support' Saints and Cobblers expansion

The clubs were at loggerheads with Northampton Borough Council over fears that re-development would harm town centre trade. Now, councillors have voted to support any future planning applications.

Development plans - for both Franklin's Gardens and Sixfields - have caused controversy in recent years, with fans often accusing the local authority of not supporting the clubs.

But last night the full council agreed a motion, proposed by the Conservative group leader David Palethorpe "recognising the importance and value of the Saints and the Cobblers, to the sporting, cultural and economic well-being, of the town."

The Council has been instructed to write to the Homes and Communities Agency - as well as the two clubs - telling them the authority has no underlying objections to any planning applications, subject to the normal planning process, that would help to ensure the teams' continuing development and success.

The news has been welcomed by the Saints - although Councillor Richard Church, from the ruling Liberal Democrat group, is concerned it could prejudice the planning process.
