Searching for seals

As female polar bears emerge from their dens with young cubs they need to find food quickly, as they have not eaten for the past five months. Without catching a regular supply of food, the mother's milk will fail and her cub will starve to death. With an extrodinary sense of smell, polar bears can detect the scent of a seal over two miles away. This time of life is crucial. As the young cub watches its mother, it begins to learn what it must do if it is to survive, developing muscles and improving co-ordination.
