Dangerous waters
Swarming mysid shrimp provide a final feast for Pacific salmon congregating in a bay. The rivers they need to travel up to spawn are not yet high enough, so the fish must wait in the bay until the time is right. However, predators lurk in the murky waters. Salmon sharks, a close relative of the great white shark, can maintain their body temperature at a higher level than the surrounding water. This means they have the energy for a quick attack.
