Stingray finger food
Steve Leonard is scuba diving with stingrays off the coast of the Cayman Islands. They gather here in huge numbers to feed. Rays are sharks’ cousins but their body-plan has flattened out to make the most of life on the sea bed. Rays eat fish and they know Steve has got a juicy morsel in his hand. He has to be careful when feeding them as their mouth has a nasty suck. They don’t have much in the way of teeth but they have a bony plate that acts as a grinder. The rays here usually hunt crab and fish that they can detect hidden in the sand. Stingrays have an array of fine-tuned senses, something that the shark family has taken to a whole new level.
