Winter warmers
Musk oxen have the ultimate fur coats. Their insulation is so good they can survive at temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius. Warmed by their central heating and stoked up by regular meals, musk oxen have managed to beat the elements and eat their way north to the fringes of the Arctic ocean. Central heating and fur coats let mammals range even to the icy reaches of the poles. There, dense fur allows a baby seal to undergo the biggest temperature shock experienced by any animal on earth. That is, from around 40 degrees inside its mother鈥檚 body to as low as minus 30 when it is born and hits the ice. The miracle of the cub's survival depends not just on its fur but on its mother鈥檚 dedication. She provides the milk that keeps it warm inside.
