Food banks, interfaith celebrations and surviving Thalidomide

Stocking up the food bank in Debenham, interfaith in Ipswich and surviving Thalidomide.

A Suffolk Church stocks up its food bank, and it's 31 years of the Mayor's Celebration of Community in Ipswich.

Rob hears how different churches in Suffolk are tackling social problems and how different faiths in Suffolk are promoting peace and understanding.

Members of the Forge Community church in Debenham are heading out to the local shops after today's services to stock up the church's food bank.

Becky Green, the churches community worker, told Rob: "Only last week we donated food parcels to a single mum who was feeding her kids on nothing but oats because she couldn't afford anything else."

Across the county Anglican congregations are also being encouraged to become more active in the community.

Marion Welham, Church Buildings and Tourism Officer for the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich organised the Crossing the Threshold conference this week, to explore how buildings might be used outside worship times to benefit the whole community.

Rob also hears about work in Suffolk to bring different faiths together.

Rev Cliff Reed, the Minister at the Unitarian Meeting House and Honorary President of the Suffolk Inter-faith Resource, reflects on 31 years of the Mayor's Celebration of Community.

The annual event, now held at the New Wolsey theatre, is a celebration to recognise the importance of faith and religious tradition in the lives of many local people.

This year's theme is Caring for People.

Rob also hears from Mojlum Khan, the Chair of the Ipswich and Suffolk Muslim Council.

He is giving his backing to a national campaign countering negative perceptions of Muslims.

And if that wasn't enough, Rob catches up with the Suffolk Rector living on Job Seekers Allowance for lent and hears an inspiring story from Brian Gault, speaking in Suffolk about being one of the 455 survivors of the "miracle drug" Thalidomide, used in the British market in the 1960s.

Today Brian is speaking at Felixstowe's River of Life Church at 10.30am and then at Southwold URC at 6pm.
