The Dome’s scary vision of the future
In part four of the British at Work, Kirsty Young meets Tim Pyne, the designer behind the ‘Work Zone’ in the ill-fated Millennium Dome. Pyne was briefed to design a vision of a flexible, changeable and dynamic work place of the future but was concerned that the vision ultimately left visitors plagued by insecurity and worry.
In this final part of the series, Kirsty explores the faster and less secure working environment we live in today. These are years characterised by work as an all-consuming experience as attitudes change. This is the age in which many certainties about working life are banished and many are forced to adjust to a life of stressful and contractual insecurity. Just as the ‘Work Zone’ predicted.
