Sugar awakens suddenly to find William sitting on her bed. William has come to ask for forgiveness after his drunken behaviour that night, having spent the evening with Bodley and Ashwell.
Promising a change in the household, William invites Sugar and Sophie to visit his soap factory the next day as he is meeting someone there. Sugar accepts the apology and invitation with a coolness and caution.
Taking hold of her hand, William tries to reassure Sugar how important he is to her. She tells him to get some rest and returns to sleep. William watches her for a moment.
