The Extension of Man

Sir Leon Bagrit considers how computers will help humans fulfil their potential in his first Reith lecture entitled 'The Extension of Man'.

This year's Reith lecturer is Sir Leon Bagrit. He is the Chairman and Managing Director of Elliott Automation Ltd one of the first companies in Europe devoted to automation. He is also a Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and a Member of the Council of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. He was formerly a Member of the Council of the Royal College of Art and is a leading British industrialist and pioneer of automation.

In his Reith series 'The Age of Automation' Sir Leon Bagrit explores how our increased technological development in computing has changed the world we live in.

In this lecture entitled 'The Extension of Man', Sir Bagrit analyses how automation in this true sense is brought to full fruition only through the exploitation of its three major elements; communication, computation, and control. These are what Sir Bagrit describes as the three 'Cs '. He puts forward the implications of these three 'Cs' on society and explains that computers are here to fulfil our potential.
