"A bad beginning for a good ending" - can the adage hold true in S Sudan?

The world's community of nations gets a brand new member in a few days’ time. After a long civil war, South Sudan will celebrate its independence this Saturday. No fewer than thirty African heads of state are expected to watch the ceremony in the new capital Juba.

Peter Martell says there are tough challenges lie ahead; but that the country's optimism is irrepressible.

A golf course with a difference

India is well known internationally for its passionate love of cricket. You see people playing the game on street corners and patches of waste ground all over the country. But now golf, too, is becoming popular - even outside its traditionally elite market.

Rajini Vaidyanathan has taken a stroll round a highly unusual course, in the company of some very competitive and exceptionally driven golfers.
