6 Mix explores the sun-drenched sound of nu-balearica with a monster mix from one of its rising stars; Washed Out. With an analogue aesthetic referencing shoegazing and synth pop, nu-balearica is often labelled Chillwave; a term which set the blogs on fire when it was first coined in the US at the end of 2009. Since then it has outgrown its hipster origins into a fully fledged phenomenon, with acts like Toro Y Moi and Neon Indian touring across the world. In this programme 6 Music gives its airwaves over to Chillwave's biggest star, Ernest Greene, better known as Washed Out. Hailing from Georgia USA, Greene started making lo-fi beats in his college dorm in Atlanta before releasing a series of mix tapes online. In this show Ernest talks about his brand new album 'Within and Without' and plays tracks which have inspired him from 10cc, DJ Shadow and Madlib as well as current favourites from Blondes and Pional. Washed Out discusses chillwave, how he feels about it going global and what's next for the nu-balearic sound.
