After seeing your raven pulling the string to get the food, I thought you'd be interested in this video taken by my PhD student, Ella Cole, showing a great tit doing the same thing spontaneously. The tit had presumably never done this before because it was a wild bird we were keeping in captivity for just 24 hours as part of a study on personality. Initially the tit tries to get the food by conventional means but then it does something we thought was pretty amazing.
