Stoke suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat - their first of the season - at Sunderland last week but then knocked out Tottenham in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night, following a tense penalty shoot-out.

In League Two, Port Vale lost 2-3 to Shrewsbury, who currently lie in third place, while Crewe beat Accrington Stanley 0-2 to go ahead of them in the table.
