Desmond and Nash unite the jazz generations
Paul Desmond with his West Coast style in 1956 and Derek Nash in a similar style now.
The Paul Desmond Quartet has been reissued and his style is very West Coast with Don Elliott playing mellophone. It’s from an LP which was recorded in 1956.
Britain’s Derek Nash with his Acoustic Quartet is playing very much in a West Coast style, but recorded 55 years later. The Merseysippi Jazz Band played in Liverpool’s Cavern Club before the Beatles, as did many trad bands from the North West. There’s a sample of their playing in tonight’s programme.
Jamie Brownfield of the Brownfield–Byrne Quintet has scooped himself an award and to mark a reissue of a Ray Foxley CD, we’ve unearthed an interview with him from 20-odd years ago.
We also record the deaths of two stalwarts of the jazz world. One is Pete Rugolo who arranged for Kenton in the 1950s and went onto write themes for television shows and in the Midlands, trumpeter and train photographer Roger Siviter who died last week.
